So the trend these days among amateur golfers is to find a way to set oneself apart using customization of equipment. I am not talking changing lofts and lies and such, although there is definite merit to that… I am talking paint-filled wedges, stamping and customized head covers. All of this does NOTHING to give a player an equipment advantage, but it does give a player a sense of being more awesome… apparently. Of course I have fallen victim to this trend…
Paint Filling
One area that allows for some easy do-it-yourself customization is paint filling your clubs. I have gone ahead and tried this a few times to moderate success. Some of the downside is that you must clean out the original paint fill using some pretty harsh chemicals. This can get quite laborious and kills a few brain cells. Its definitely worth taking a look at if you are bored some rainy afternoon and want a golf related activity to clear your mind… literally.
Some examples of more professional paint fill work.
Club Stamping
IF you are feeling a little more adventurous and have a nice stable table mounted vice you might want to check out club stamping. You would be required to purchase a nice set of hardened metal stamping tools (usually around $25-$35 online). Combined with a nice weighted stamping hammer and nerves of steel and you are on your way. The difficulty I have with stamping is the possibility of making a mistake you can’t UNDO… I sent my scotty cameron putter back to scotty cameron’s custom shop a few years back for some custom stamping and paint fill… Not something I was going to mess with myself. When done correctly a set of stamped wedges and putter look quite nice… and make your set different than ANYONE ELSE!
Custom Club Head Covers
One of the newest customizations is in the club head cover game. Quite a few new companies popping up that do full club head cover customization. They can get to be quite pricey depending on how custom you want the cover to look, but its something that will stick with your game well after the club its covering has been replaced… A company I have done some work with recently is Sunfish Sales (www.sunfishsales.com). I can already attest to their incredible customer service and attention to detail. All of this customer service and quality comes at a price however… a fully customized leather driver cover will set you back over $100.
All of this just adds some individuality to ones setup and might actually give you some added swagger on the course. If done well, paint fills and stamping can really spice up your clubs and adding some customized head covers just finishes it off.
